Definition of the Role:

To provide a mixture of management and front line youth work delivery to drive and deliver a high quality, effective Mental Health & Wellbeing focused Youth Work in the new YMCA St Helens Youth Hub and around St Helens, ensuring youth voice is at the heart of all activities.

To work with the Youth Hub management team (Listening Service Manager & Mentoring & Compliance Manager) to oversee quality, evaluation and monitoring activities, ensuring fulfilment of funding, health and safety, and safeguarding requirements in all youth work activities.

Purpose of the Role:

To Provide and manage an effective program of Youthwork activities (delivered in house and via partners), which reaches out to young people aged between 11 and 25 (with a particular focus on 11-18), promoting their personal, educational and social development, and engaging them in activities aimed at re-dressing inequalities, improving their life chances,  and empowering them to take action on issues affecting their lives, including mental and physical health, education, unemployment and the environment, by developing skills and attitudes.

The manager will ensure that all young people accessing the Youth Hub, and other youth work activities, are kept safe, overseeing program related health and safety and safeguarding practices, and that evidence showing activities outcomes and quality are effectively collected and monitored

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage and administer youth work activities, projects and resources.

  • To develop and lead the delivery of a programme of youth hub youth work activities for 11–25 year-olds under the themes of Get Active and Get Creative, developing additional activities meeting the needs of young people as they arise.
  • Support the development of LGBTQI+ support activities, with young people in the lead (in partnership with other agencies/providers).
  • Work with Listening Service Manager and Mentoring/compliance manager to support 11–25-year-olds to engage with relevant support from the Listening service, Y Mentoring, and/or other support partners.

 

To enthuse, motivate and lead the youth work team.

  • Responsible for staffing rotas and staff absence requests, ensuring sufficient staffing requirements to deliver planned activities.
  • Line management of youthwork delivery staff, including HR related tasks and professional development. To undertake supervisions and reviews as requires.

 

Work with the youthwork leadership team to:

  • Ensure the smooth functioning of the Youth Hub, and wider youthwork activities, whilst planning and delivering special events and activities
  • Recruit, coordinate, train and support staff and volunteers in delivering a programme of youthwork (for 11–25-year-olds) at evenings and weekends.
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate youth work activities and services as per project plans.

Project Delivery:

  • Undertake youth work, observing all required welfare and safety procedures.
  • Support the Lead youth worker to develop young volunteers and opportunities for them to take the lead.
  • Work in partnership with YMCA St Helens Youthwork management team, and partners to manage a diary of youth activities
  • Support the compliance manager in ensuring evaluations and evidence collections (for outcomes and outputs) are efficient, effective and collect relevant required information and are implemented regularly.
  • Ensure compliance with appropriate organisational/project policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that good and robust safeguarding and health and safety practices are implemented for all youthwork activities, ensuring staff are informed, confident and are keeping young people safe from harm.
  • Keep abreast of health and safety & safeguarding policies and procedures and ensure they are followed/implemented.

 

Strategy and Development:

  • Work with the youth work leadership team to promote all youth work activities in appropriate ways, developing material as required.
  • Connect with and maintain positive working relationships with other youthwork/youth-support activities taking place in St Helens and surrounding areas.
  • Oversee and deliver an annual calendar of staff training, ensuring opportunities to reflect, and develop personal & professional practice.
  • Work with the Youthwork leadership team to drive the vision for a Mental Health and Wellbeing Early Intervention Youth Hub;
  • Keep up to date on local and national, trends and information on young people and youthwork issues.
  • Report on project/service performance to SLT as required.
  • Keep abreast of organisational policies and procedures and ensure they are followed.

Skills and Attributes:

Essential:

  • Experience, qualifications, and understanding of outcome focused youth work and managing youth work teams
  • Knowledge & experience of working with young people with mental health/SEN/challenging behaviours.
  • Strong commitment to young people and an understanding of the factors affecting their lives, ability to effectively communicate.
  • Ability to provide reliable support to young people in times of stress and act with integrity.
  • Good understanding of youthwork with strong young people’s skills and listening skills
  • Strong management skills
  • Knowledge & experience of working with young people with low level mental health needs.
  • Good relationship/communication skills – especially when working with partner agencies, and multi-disciplined staff teams.
  • Strong practical understanding of safeguarding and health and safety within a youthwork setting.
  • Ability to work evening and weekends.
  • Self-motivated with high level of initiative and excellent interpersonal and networking skills

 

Desirable:

  • Flexible approach to working, able to adapt to changing landscape
  • Capacity to engage with people from various sectors, cultures and traditions.
  • Qualified in First Aid
  • Experience of monitoring and evaluating projects with clear outcomes being successfully delivered.
  • Experienced in managing teams of paid staff and volunteers and budgets.
  • Experience of monitoring targeted and writing reports for funders/commissioners’
  • Strong computer & administration skills
  • Experience working with young people with SEND.
  • Current driving licence (with category B1 – or willing to train) and access to vehicle.

Hours of work: 35 per week

Salary:  Between £29,000 & £30,450 dependent on experience  per annum
