Definition of the Role:
To support the delivery of high quality, children’s, family and youth work activities reaching out to families, children and young people aged between 6 and 18 (at different times).
Promoting their personal, educational and social development, and engaging them in activities aimed at re-dressing inequalities, improving their life chances, and empowering them to take action on issues affecting their lives, including mental and physical health, education, unemployment and the environment, by developing skills and attitudes.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver 2 x weekly “Family Matters” after school clubs located in Local Family Hubs. Providing activities for children aged 5 -10 with parents present.
- Plan and deliver 1 x weekly after school club for 10–14-year-olds (school year 6-9) located in a partner organisation in St Helens.
- Support the delivery of children and youth work at YMCA St Helens youth hub as needed.
- Undertake children and youth work, observing all required welfare and safety procedures.
- Support individual children & young people based on their needs.
Project Delivery
- Ensure compliance with appropriate organisational/project policies and procedures.
- Maintain overview and link with Family Hub activities, YMCA St Helens Children, Youth, and family work activities and other relevant activities taking place in St Helens and surrounding areas.
Additional Duties:
To be aware of our organisational ethos and policies and to work within them.

Skills and Attributes:
Essential
- Ability to work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays within the hours of 1:30-6pm.
- Current driving licence and access to vehicle
- Experience and/or qualifications in children/youth work and/or children/youth-based activities.
- Good understanding of children’s and/or youth work and the needs of children and young people.
- Practical understanding of health and safety within a children and youth work setting
- Experience of successfully delivering children/youth work projects
- Skill/knowledge/experience in one of the following areas
- Get Active (e.g. Dance/Drama/Sports)
- Get Creative (e.g. Art/Digital Media/Craft/Cooking)
- Supporting SEND children/youth
- Strong children and/or young people’s skills
- Self-motivated with high level of initiative
- Safeguarding young people experience/training
Desirable
- Level 2 or 3 certificate or Diploma in Youth Work Practice or equivalent for children’s work
- Knowledge & experience of working with children and/or young people with mental health/SEN/challenging behaviours
- Flexible approach to working, able to adapt to changing landscape
- Capacity to engage with people from various sectors, cultures and traditions
- Experience working with children/young people with SEND
- Qualified in First Aid
