Definition of the Role:
To assist the Support Manager in managing Support Practitioners and developing the capacity and motivation of the team to deliver an innovative and high-quality support approach.
Purpose of the Role:
Working closely as part of a small team, the post holder, will provide day to day supervision and assist in the development of the support department and its services. The organisation operates a “The Flexible Hostel Approach” working with complex and challenging service users who present with homelessness, mental health, substance misuse, and offending behavior, with the aim of promoting independent living. The post holder will act as a supporting supervisor to the support practitioners to map out effective service delivery by way of detailed supporting, planning, and identifying relevant interventions to ensure appropriate professional agencies are involved in assisting service users. To offer supervisory advice, training and support to the support practitioners, to ensure that they are adequately equipped to deliver meaningful work.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Ensure residents receive flexible, person-centred support informed by Trauma Informed Care and reflective practice.
- To ensure that Service Users are aware of the mission, aims and objectives, policies and procedures of YMCA St Helens and the duties, responsibilities and obligations of staff.
- Manage the day to day running of the hostel utilising “The Flexible Hostel Approach”.
- Actively involving Service Users in their support and the organisation.
- Maintain excellent communication with YMCA St Helens Management team
- Supervise the staff team assigned to you
- Prepare for QAF inspections as required.
Responsibilities to the Support Manager
- To compile and collate monthly reports on KPI’s
- Ensure YMCA St Helens complies with contractual requirements
- To support staff making informed opinions and recommendations regarding the types of support offered to service users and support and guide staff in dealing with them.
- To make recommendations to the Support Manager on the effectiveness of the service delivery and improvements or introduction of best practice.
- Attend and meaningfully contribute to in-house and external meetings submitting reports as required.
Representing YMCA St Helens
- Attend relevant meetings, stakeholder days, forums and other events.
- Represent YMCA St Helens at regional and national level from time to time.
- Develop relationships with partner agencies, referral agencies and all other stakeholders.
Line Management and HR responsibilities
- Support and develop the capacity and motivation of the team to deliver an innovative and high-quality support and housing service.
- Monitor the team’s contribution to the day-to-day effectiveness of support planning, key-working and resident engagement along with collection of rents and ensuring compliance of staff with the HB application process and complex HB claims.
- Collate data on the performance of the service and team and make recommendations to the Support Manager to ensure the service achieves its KPI’s.
- Allocation of Service Users to support practitioners to ensure the residents have the most appropriate support worker assigned.
- Ensure the induction of new staff to the service.
Working with Service Users
- Encourage involvement and participation from residents in the development, running and shaping of the service.
Health and Safety
- Liaise with emergency services as required.
- Ensure at all time the safety of yourselves and others on the premises in which you work.
- Ensure their working areas meet legislation requirements.
Teamwork
- Develop trusting and secure working relationships with colleagues, sharing information and expertise, covering absence and working together to deliver high quality services.
- Maintain contacts with local statutory and voluntary agencies and organisations attending/ representing YMCA St Helens at relevant local community forums, seminars and conferences as required.
- Contribute to the organisations formulation of policy and procedures.
- Attend and participate in team meetings to ensure good communications and liaison with colleagues .
- Prepare for and attend One to One’s and PDR sessions with the Support Manager taking direction as appropriate and contributing to the development of both you and the service.
General
- Undertake own administrative services

The post holder will be expected to carry out other duties consistent with the responsibilities of the post, they will be expected to demonstrate flexibility in all areas of their work. They will be expected to carry out some out of hours duties such as emergencies and meetings called at short notice.
Scope and limits of authority
Work within agreed policies recommending changes where necessary and co operate with all other staff to ensure the best interests of YMCA St Helens are always a prime consideration.
35 hours per week
£35,500 per annum
