Definition of the Role:

To oversee the development, promotion and delivery of a “Take the Lead” program ensuring the voice of young people are at the heart of the YMCA St Helens Early Intervention Youth Hub, and the organisation as a whole.

Purpose of the Role:

Lead the development of a young leaders and youth voice program of activities which:

  • Develops leadership skills in young people and supports the development of opportunities to put the skills into practice
  • Gives Young People an opportunity to express their views in a meaningful way and be listened to at YMCA St Helens and in the local community
  • Enables young people to gain ASDAN awards and other relevant accreditations/awards to recognise their progress

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Take the Lead/Youth Voice

 

  • Lead on developing opportunities for young people to actively “Take the Lead” in youthwork activities, including the development of a young person’s steering group and young leaders training program.

 

To work with the youthwork leadership team to promote and network with partners, external organisations and funders.

 

Marketing & Promotion

  • Work with the youthwork leadership team to promote all youthwork activities in appropriate ways, developing material as required.

 

Work with the youthwork leadership team to:

  • Ensure the smooth functioning of the Youth Hub, and wider youthwork leadership team for the Early Intervention Youth Hub.
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate youthwork activities and services as per project plans.
  • Plan and deliver special events and activities

Project Delivery:

  • Work in partnership with YMCA St Helens Youthwork management team, and partners to manage a diary of youth activities
  • Ensure compliance with appropriate organisational/project policies and procedures.

 

Strategy and Development:

  • Work with the Youthwork leadership team to drive the vision for a Mental Health and Wellbeing Early Intervention Youth Hub;
  • Keep up to date on local and national, trends and information on young people and youthwork issues.

 

Program coordination:

  • Deliver staff/volunteer training on youth voice/participation where appropriate.
  • Support young people to report (in appropriate ways) on project/service or issues which affect theme to OLT/SLT as required.
  • Keep abreast of organisational policies and procedures and ensure they are followed.  

 

Safeguarding:

  • Work with the youthwork leadership team to ensuring staff are informed, confident and are keeping young people safe from harm both in terms of H&S and safeguarding.
  • Keep abreast of safeguarding policies and procedures and ensure they are followed/implemented.

 

Additional Duties:

To be aware of our organisational ethos and policies and to work within them.

 Skills and Attributes:

Essential:

  • Experience, qualifications, and understanding of outcome focused youthwork and managing youthwork teams
  • Knowledge & experience of working with young people with mental health/SEN/challenging behaviours.
  • Practical understanding of Lundy model of child participation
  • Strong commitment to young people, youth participation and youth voice
  • An understanding of the factors affecting young people’s lives, ability to effectively communicate.
  • Ability to provide reliable support to young people in times of stress and act with integrity.
  • Good understanding of youthwork
  • Knowledge & experience of working with young people with low level mental health needs.
  • Good relationship/communication skills – especially when working with partner agencies, and multi-disciplined staff teams.
  • Strong practical understanding of health and safety within a youthwork setting.
  • Very strong young people’s skills and strong listening skills
  • Ability to work evening and weekends.
  • Self-motivated with high level of initiative
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills
  • Safeguarding young people experience/training.

 

Desirable:

  • Flexible approach to working, able to adapt to changing landscape
  • Capacity to engage with people from various sectors, cultures and traditions.
  • Qualified in First Aid
  • Experience of successfully delivering and coordinating youthwork activities
  • Experience of monitoring and evaluating projects with clear outcomes being successfully delivered.
  • Experience of monitoring targets and writing reports for funders/commissioners’ Strong computer & administration skills
  • Flexible approach to working, able to adapt to changing landscape
  • Capacity to engage with people from various sectors, cultures and traditions.
  • Experience working with young people with SEND.
  • Current driving licence (with category B1 – or willing to train) and access to vehicle.
  • Able to promote the Christian ethos of the organisation.

20 hours per week

Salary £14,857 per Annum
